AP Research
Students are expected to bring skills and traits necessary for future academic study through the examination of multiple perspectives, evaluation of credibility of sources, construction of arguments and communication of their findings during their research investigation.
Course Overview
Although Thousand Oaks High School has two pathways for AP Research, Humanities/Social Science and STEM, the transcript does not reflect a difference and student are encouraged to select a course that best suits their interests and passions.
What Students Will Learn
AP Research involves application of prior knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving throughout the year.
During their research and investigation, students are expected to reach out to highly qualified expert advisers, collaborate with scientists/expert advisers (approved by the The Center) from local colleges, universities and industry. All students are required to use primary and secondary research to complete a detailed research project in AP Research this year. While working toward their research projects, they are expected to practice good work ethics and use critical thinking skills throughout the course.
The Research Project
The inquiry and investigation will lead to the following products:
1. 4,000-5,000 words Academic Paper
2. PREP Notebook
3. A presentation and oral defense to a panel of evaluators
4. A professional poster board
5. Presentation of research findings at the Festival of Scholars in the Spring
Extending to the Senior Year
AP Research students are encouraged to extend their junior year research project into their senior year; this can be accomplished by completing their research via 2-year pathway. For more information on each of these pathways, see one of The Center faculty members.
